About Malta
Malta is located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea having a population of circa 453,000. Its capital city is Valletta named after the Grandmaster of the Order of the Knights Jean Parisot de La Vallette.
After being emperored by various empires, Malta achieved its independence on 21 September 1964, whereby the head of state was still Queen Elizabeth II. on 13 December 1974, Malta declared itself as a republic nation and it had the first President, Sir Anthony Mamo, as head of state.
In 1990, Malta applied to join the European Union (EU). After a referendum held in 2003, Malta joined the EU in May 2004.
Later Malta introduced the Euro currency as its national currency.
